Thomas B. Warren School Psychologist of the Year


The purpose of the award (awarded in odd years) is to identify and recognize an outstanding school psychologist/psychometrist and to increase public awareness of the profession. It is named in honor of the first president of AASP, Thomas B. Warren. Dr. Warren graduated from Athens State University and Alabama A&M University. He taught elementary school and later was employed as a psychometrist in Lawrence, Winston, and Franklin Counties. 


Eligibility requirements for nominees:

  • Must be practicing school psychologist/psychometrist who spends the majority of their time providing direct services to students, teachers, and parents in school settings. 
  • Must have a proven track record of providing outstanding direct psychological services; benefiting one or more students in the school systems of Alabama
  • Must be a current member, in good standing of Alabama Association of School Psychologists (AASP)
  • Must be nominated by a current member in good standing of Alabama Association of School Psychologists (AASP)

2019 Recipient 


Andrea De La Garza graduated from Texas A&M and has worked as a school psychologist for approximately 13 years in Maryland, Tennessee and the last 6 years in Alabama. Her colleagues note she is a team player, asks questions to improve her skills, is a mentor, and demonstrates respect and dignity for all persons. She provides training to special education teachers on administration and interpretation of tests and ensures teachers understand their responsibilities of administration, scoring, and utilization of available information. Her planning skills allow her to meet timelines consistently. She presents data in a way that is understandable without demeaning parents, thoughtfully provides answers to questions, and provides meaningful recommendations. She brings knowledge and experience of RTI as well as bilingualism to her schools and District and is currently conducting a small group for organization skills (with 5th graders).


The 2019 recipient of the Thomas B. Warren School Psychologist of the Year is Andrea De La Garza of Madison City Schools.
